Diving Deep into Spring – The “Play” of the Mouth Bow (La-dol)
The Bunun people have a popular musical instrument named “mouth bow” (la-dol). The bow part is made of bamboo, and its string is made of fine linen or rattan fiber. While played, one end of the bow is kept in cheek, the other end is held by the left hand, and the string is plucked by the right hand. The mouth bow music sounds subtle, carefree and pregnant with profound meaning. For the Bunun male, mouth bow playing is a recreation between hunts and a distraction from loneliness. It is a perfect prescription for a hunter to get it out of his chest and pour forth words from his heart. It is also a catalyst for men and women to express their love and affection to each other.
